Creating a Stock Keeping Unit, or SKU, involves assigning a unique identifier to each product or item in your inventory. SKUs are alphanumeric codes that help businesses track and manage their inventory more efficiently. Here are some Shopify specific tips to follow:

  • Always create a new product rather than duplicating and changing a current product.

    • Why? Shopify not only copies the basic product, but that back end data as well (EX: Product ID) which can sometimes cause problems down the road.

  • Always use a unique SKU.

    • Why? Having duplicate SKUs can cause data confusion.

  • Avoid spaces
    • Why? Spaces in SKUs can cause problems in certain systems. Use dashes, underscores, or camel case to separate words if needed.

  • Keep it simple.
    • Why? Long and complicated SKUs can be challenging to manage and prone to errors.
